Slide 2015 beef ban in India created a cow leather penury weakening many artisans, as response
we started a nomadic studio uniting artisans and designers in a dialogue with a durable recycled
replacement material. In India, leather workers, cobblers, tanners, treated as untouchables are
self-identifying as Dalits, it means Broken in Sanskrit. It became CHAMAR, a turning point for
the people 'beyond the four castes' who stitch together contemporary creations in a claim for dignity
of their identity, their crafts heritage and their ancient history.
A quest of caste equality through
self-sovereignty and liberation with
crafts, design, contemporary art as tools.
